Desperate Residents Leap From Los Angeles High Rise As Fire Burns 25-Story Apartment Building


A tragic scene is unfolding in Los Angeles as a fire broke out in a 25-story apartment building.

Some of the people had no choice but to jump from the burning building according to numerous reports.

A fire broke out in a 25-story Westside residential building on Wednesday morning, triggering a large response from city firefighters and reportedly forcing residents to jump from the structure, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.

The fire was reported shortly after 8:30 a.m. at the Barrington Plaza apartments in the 11700 block Wilshire Boulevard in the Sawtelle neighborhood.

It is not clear how many people have jumped from the building, according to the Fire Department. Initial reports indicated that 10 units were on fire and firefighters were working amid strong winds in the area.

Fire officials said evacuations were underway. Television video showed residents, some in bathrobes, on the roof of the building with a fire helicopter overhead lifting them to safety. Officials didn’t say whether anyone had been injured.

Video shows heavy flames inside the building and thick black smoke pouring from at least one balcony and several windows. As flames raged inside the building, a resident was seen climbing out of a window to escape. The person was rescued by firefighters, according to reports from the scene.
